The Best of Debussy

Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 – 25 March 1918) was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Born to a family of modest means and little cultural involvement, Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at the age of ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He originally studied the piano, but found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of the Conservatoire's conservative professors. He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.

Debussy's orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899) and Images (1905–1912). His music was to a considerable extent a reaction against Wagner and the German musical tradition. He regarded the classical symphony as obsolete and sought an alternative in his "symphonic sketches", La mer (1903–1905). His piano works include two books of Préludes and two of Études. Throughout his career he wrote mélodies based on a wide variety of poetry, including his own. He was greatly influenced by the Symbolist poetic movement of the later 19th century. A small number of works, including the early La Damoiselle élue and the late Le Martyre de saint Sébastien have important parts for chorus. In his final years, he focused on chamber music, completing three of six planned sonatas for different combinations of instruments.

With early influences including Russian and far-eastern music, Debussy developed his own style of harmony and orchestral colouring, derided – and unsuccessfully resisted – by much of the musical establishment of the day. His works have strongly influenced a wide range of composers including Béla Bartók, Olivier Messiaen, George Benjamin, and the jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans. Debussy died from cancer at his home in Paris at the age of 55 after a composing career of a little more than 30 years.

Rimuru Tempest Sama : Once you try Debussy you can never go Bach.
Tweeterhead : Imagine going through a breakup in the 1800s and Debussy drops another banger
Anna R : Debussy is unlike other composers. Instead of being dramatic and going all out with an entire orchestra, most of his songs are hauntingly ethereal and beautiful - and produced by a single, lone piano. pure magic.
Prestige Food and Wine : The first time I heard music by Debussy I was 19 and a friend of mine was learning to play Clare de Lune... She could only play the first few bars but I had a very strong reaction to the music and went out of my way to discover more. I am 59 now and I have been playing the piano since I was about 30; I didn't have the opportunity until then, and I am mostly self-taught so my technique is unorthodox and my sight-reading is very poor. I wanted to play the piano even as a child but it wasn't possible. WHen I heard Clare de Lune I told myself I will play it one day. Last year I started to have lessons with a wonderful teacher and I told her my ambition is to play Clare de Lune, and she is helping me to get there. To be able to make this music myself is my dream. I can never tire of it.

Mark Dayoc : I rcv’d a sample of Ganymede and was WOWED by how good it smelled. Actually I wasn’t expecting it. Never heard of it. I wore it for my SOTD and was sitting in the hospital when a nurse came and asked what I was wearing and said, “it smells so good!” She continued to ask me to show it on my phone, took a picture, and said she was buying it! I knew then it was bottle worthy. Just ordered mine from Lucky Scents. She apologized to my wife who was with me saying she doesn’t normally act that way but that it was one of the best fragrances she’s ever smelled. My wife approved of my purchase!
operachef1 : I notice that most of the comments here are by men, however, as a woman this has become my number one go to fragrance. I had been searching and ordering decants for months to find a totally elegant, sophisticated and mature perfume that was not sweet, floral or traditionally feminine. As soon as I opened the little vial I knew. After wearing it for a few hours, it was true love. NOTHING else has excited me as much as this one and not only has it become my most complimented fragrance, my day fragrance and several of my female friends want to purchase it as well! Yes, very expensive to buy in Canadian currency, but worth it as it is "the one" for me. And I agree, Bisch is a master perfumer. Utterly gorgeous!!
sarahwig1 : This is one of the best smelling fragrances on the market at the moment. As a woman who prefers more masculine smells, Ganymede is ideal. Not too heavy and not too light. It’s perfect. And available in the UK from Les Senteurs, £150 for 100ml.
totalxindecision : I got a surprise sample of this and sprayed it without paying attention to the notes. I was blown away, and although I usually don't go for leathery fragrances, I LOVE this one in spite of the prominent suede note on my skin. As a whole, the fragrance is so crisp and fresh yet smooth and comforting. Totally unisex, IMO, and I'd be fighting to not nuzzle anyone wearing this next to me. It is unlike anything else I normally choose to wear, but a bottle is going on my wishlist.
